How to: Rihanna inspired hair

So last weekend I blogged about my hairstyle inspired by Rihanna in her music video for We Found Love. As requested, here is a quick tutorial on how to put it up!

It really is the easiest thing, all you need is some curls, some bobby pins (i use about 40 but my hair is super thick and long) and a hair band.

STEP ONE: START WITH CURLS
Personally I think that this style only works with curls. If you have naturally curly hair (like me!), great you're good to go. If you're naturally wavy or straight, you only need to curl the very top section of your hair properly, as the rest just gets pinned.
I also think it works best with "day old" hair, when it's already producty and heavy.

STEP TWO: IDENTIFY THE SEXIEST CURLS AND PIN THEM INTO PLACE AROUND YOUR FACE
You'll find that if you skip this stage then you'll struggle to get the nice curls to be on display. So simply have a rummage through your barnet and pull the nicest curls out, then secure them to the front using a bobby pin per curl.
For those of you curling your hair to do this, these are the only curls that need to be perfect. So be lazy with the rest.

STEP THREE: ROLL IT AND PIN IT
Starting from the top of your head, just twist and roll one side of your hair, so the bulk of your hair sits on the other side of your hair. Secure with as many pins as is needed to keep this in place. (I use about 8)

STEP FOUR: TAKE THE TOP SECTION AND PIN IT FORWARDS
I apologise, this photo doesnt really make it clear. Basically all you're doing is picking up the very top of your hair and just flipping it towards your fringe and stick a few pins in it. This is just so you have enough long curls going forward.
If you have lots of layers, skip this step.

STEP FIVE: ROLL THE REST OF YOUR HAIR UPWARDS
From the nape of your neck, just take all that gorgeous hair and roll it upwards (the same as the other side just in the opposite direction). Try and work neatly as this will be on display... but if you can't be bothered.. just wack it up. Secure with as many pins as it needs to keep everything in place. Overlap the pins if you have tons of hair, I used about 20 pins.

STEP SIX: ADMIRE LOOKING LIKE A SCARECROW
If it looks a bit like this (aka an absolute mess) then you're on the right tracks- don't be put off by how much of a mess it looks.

STEP SEVERN: JUST START PINNING THE BULK DOWN
So now you need to start taming the beast. All i do is literally secure half of the bulk down using pins, putting them like halfway down the curl. This makes the top look neat but the curly ends stand out.

STEP EIGHT: PUT THE HAIR BAND IN PLACE
Your hair should still look quite messy, to be honest the only way to start making it look good is to stick a hair band in. So whilst there is still some flyaway curls... Put your hair band in.
STEP NINE: TAKE THE REST OF THE FLY AWAY HAIR AND POSITION IT OVER THE HAIR BAND

What we're going for in this step is for it to look like it's just been messily put up so take the rest of the hair that isn't pinned down and just spread it over the top.

This will need to be pinned down after it is in place, I secure them at the top of the hairband, sliding the pins under the band so that they are hidden. This makes it look less styled.

STEP TEN: REVEL IN ITS GLORY
 And you're done.

This really is a simple style, it's essentially shoving and pinning so definitely give it a go!
You can also try pinning all the curls to one side, instead of round the face like I have it. Or instead of putting them around the face you could double them back making a messy quiff.

Let me know if you give it a go & send me pictures :)
